Houston Ceiling Fan Installation
The first ceiling fans appeared in the early 1860s and 1870s, but only started catching on in the U.S. during the energy crisis of the late 1970s, since ceiling fans use less energy than air conditioning units. While its true ceiling fans only move air, they do not directly change its temperature; however, the circulating air accelerates the rate of evaporation of the perspiration on human skin, allowing the body’s natural cooling mechanisms to function more efficiently.
There are many safety concerns for Houston electricians when installing a ceiling fan. First, they must be installed at the proper height. The dangers posed by the rotating blades of a too low ceiling fan are obvious. By law, ceiling fans have to be at least seven feet off the floor. It is also important to have the right kind of junction box. A common mistake is to replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan without first installing the proper junction box. In the United States the National Electric Code (document NFPA 70, Article 314) states that a Houston ceiling fan must be supported by an electrical junction box listed for that use. A fully assembled ceiling fan weighs 15 and 50 pounds. While most junction boxes can support the weight of the ceiling fan when it is hanging still, a fan in operation exerts considerable stress causing the junction box to fail. Another problem is “wobbling” – an effect caused by the blades being out of balance with each other. After time this wobbling effect can loosen fixture shades or covers causing them to fall.
